Scope and content

Four series are included in the Alice Thoms Vitale papers: Personal, Professional, Notes, and Manuscripts.

The Personal series contains correspondence and a program for a Japanese tea ceremony that took place in Beaufort, North Carolina, where Vitale and her husband lived after leaving New York City.

The Professional series includes research materials, newspaper clippings and publicity, and correspondence relating to the publication of Vitale’s book.

The Notes series includes notebooks, index cards, and loose pages of notes that Vitale took while working on her manuscripts. While Leaves was Vitale’s only published title, Vitale worked on several iterations of that book under various titles. Vitale also researched and wrote material for books that were never published. The notes for those other works are in this series.

Leaves underwent many changes while Vitale worked on the project. The title changed several times, as did the scope and focus of the book. Several of Vitale’s earlier drafts of the book are in the Manuscript series.
