HistoryThe Thornhill Education Center on the Arboretum's West Side stands on the former site of Joy Morton's residence, which was also called Thornhill. As part of this family estate, Morton built a chauffeur's residence some time between 1909 and 1922. In the 1960s, the Arboretum added a larger living room, a new entrance door and a garage to the limestone cottage, located north of the Thornhill Education Center. The structure served as housing for Arboretum staff for many years, and later became an annex for education staff offices. In 2016, the Arboretum determined that the Thornhill Annex, along with the nearby Outpost, would require frequent, large-scale repair, so the two buildings were replaced by the Education Support Building, which opened in fall 2017.
