Aralia elata (Miq.) Seem. (Japanese angelica tree),  against a muted background, the tip of an Aralia elata stem is shown, sporting a terminal leaf bud beginning to emerge. The stem itself is a dull light gray. Old half moon leaf scars encircle the stem, in an alternate pattern.  A row of tiny thorns encircles the leaf scars
