Representing his family at the cornerstone-laying ceremony for the Morton Medical Research Building at Northwestern University, Sterling Morton gave praise to Margaret Gray Morton, a nurse, who cared for his mother in her last days and later married his father. In her will Mrs. Morton left funds for a suitable memorial to her late husband, Joy Morton, to be used for medical purposes. He summarized Joy Morton's accomplishments in business and philanthropy, including the Morton Arboretum.
