Equisetum arvense (Field Horsetail, Common Horsetail) is a herbaceous, non-flowering perennial that is related to ferns. It has both sterile and fertile shoots. Reproductive, non-photosynthetic stems emerge in the spring and produce spores. These wither to be replaced by sterile photosynthetic stems that are coarse and up to two feet tall and remain until frost.
