Plants referred in the past to Piatanthera leucophaea (Nutt.) Lindl, have been found to comprise two species differing in pollination mechanisms, morphology, and geographic distribution. The more eastern species, P. leucophaea, is lectotypified, and the more western species is formally described as P. praeclara. Relationships of the species are discussed
