Thuja plicata ‘Excelsa’ (Columnar giant arborvitae), branches horizontal often pendant at the ends, branchlets in the same plane much divided, leaves on leading shoots parallel to the axis ovate long-pointed each with an inconspicuous resin gland on the back up to 1/4" long the points free those on the ultimate divisions smaller about 1/8" or less long ovate short and bluntly pointed closely overlapping, glossy dark green above usually faintly streaked with white beneath but on some branches remaining green, Atrovirens has excellent shining dark green foliage.
