Itea virginica ‘Morton’ (sweetspire – SCARLET BEAUTY™), image shows closeup of white flowers, this cultivar was selected in 1999 by Kris Bachtell of The Morton Arboretum, Lisle, Illinois from a plant that has been in the Arboretum’s collection since the late 1950s, native throughout the southeastern United States northward into southern Illinois, broad-rounded and measures about 3 to 4 feet tall and 4 feet wide in five years, flowers are densely borne on numerous pendant 3" long inflorescences that are produced from mid-June to early July, flowers are pleasingly fragrant and attract butterflies, foliage is medium-green foliage all summer changing to deep orange-red to red-purple in fall persist through winter in milder climates
