Itea virginica L. (sweetspire), bright green leaves and white inflorescences are shown in image, leaves are alternate simple deciduous semi-evergreen elliptic or obovate to oblong acute or short-acuminate usually cuneate at the base 1.5-4.0" long by 0.75-1.25" wide serrulate glabrous and lustrous above and sparingly pubescent beneath, petiole is 1/8-1/4" long, flowers are perfect white lightly fragrant 1/3-1/2" dia, borne in upright dense pubescent 2-6" long by 5/8" wide racemes terminating on short leafy twigs, flowers grow on prior season's wood
