Carya ovata (Mill.) K. Koch (shagbark hickory), image shows leaves and unripe (green) fruit displayed on a table, fruit is nearly round 1-1.5" diameter with shell angled 1/4-3/8" thick splitting at the base, seed is edible and quite sweet, leaves are alternate pinnately compound 8-14" long, leaflets (5, rarely 7) are 4-6" long by 0.5-2.5" wide elliptic to oblong-lanceolate acuminate serrate and densely ciliate pubescent and glandular below when young becoming glabrous with age deep yellow-green
