Magnolia x loebneri ‘Leonard Messel’ (Leonard Messel Loebner’s magnolia), this hybrid is a cross of M. kobus and M. stellata 'Rosea', small tree typically 20-30’ tall with a rounded crown, multi-stemmed form, flowers are fragrant star-like white 4-6” wide with 10-15 petals appear in March-April before the foliage, fruits are cone-like that ripen to red in late summer, releasing individual red coated seeds suspended on slender threads at maturity but sometimes absent on this hybrid, leaves are obovate medium green 5” long, a compact cultivar with beautiful two-toned flowers at an early age, strap-like petals are similar to star magnolia white on the inside and purplish-pink on the outside
