Myrica pensylvanica Loisel. (bayberry), flowers are monoecious or dioecious tending toward the dioecious character, male and female plants are both required for good fruit development, not showy, the flowers borne in catkins with male (yellowish green) consisting of varying number of stamens, the female of a one-celled ovary with two stalkless stigmas, sepals and petals are absent, blooms in late March to April before leafing out
