Castilleja coccinea (L.) Spreng. (scarlet Indian paintbrush), prairie wildflower, annual or biennial 8-24" tall with a usually solitary more or less hairy stem that arises from a rosette of basal leaves, stem leaves are 1.6" long and variable entire to commonly 3- to 5-cleft with linear or oblong segments, bracts are usually 3-lobed (sometimes 5) and reddish, terminal spike to 2.4" long is dense containing both reddish bracts and greenish-yellow flowers about 1" long
