Picea pungens Engelm. (blue spruce), leaves are greenish blue spread more or less all around the stem but more crowded above than below stout rigid incurved and very prickly 0.75 to 1.25" long varying in color on different trees (dull green, bluish, or silvery white) 4-sided with 6 stomatic lines on each side, cones are cylindrical but slightly narrowed at each end 2-4" long by 1.00-1.25" wide green with violet bloom (waxy coating) but shining brown when mature, scales are wavy oval blunt and jaggedly toothed at apex
