Pinus mugo Turra (mugo pine), branches are long, with bases laying on the ground, spreading up to 35 feet (from the base) with more-or-less ascending or erect major branch ends, leaves are in pairs persisting five or more years rigid curved medium to dark green 1-2" long margins finely toothed apex short blunt horny point stomatic lines on both surfaces, basal sheath up to about 0.6" long, needles turn orange-yellow in winter, female cones are purple ripen matte dark brown in late September to October 15 to 17 months later and opening then or (if covered by winter snow first) the following spring, individual cones are sessile or nearly so symmetrical 0.72-2.2” long by 0.56-1.12” wide when closed but opening to 1-1.8” wide angle of inclination to stem of 90-130°
