Pinus nigra ‘Arnold Sentinel’ (Arnold Sentinel Austrian pine), leaves (needles) are in pairs persisting about 4 years very dense on the branchlets stiff straight or curved 3-5" long by 1/16-1/12" wide margins minutely toothed apex thickened horny point sharp to the touch 12-14 line of stomata on each surface dark green, sheath is about 1/2" long, cones are solitary or in clusters sub-sessile ovoid conical 2-3" long by 1-1.25" wide before opening tawny-yellow initially but turning brown, cone scales are about 1" long transversely keeled near the apex which often ends in a more or less persistent prickle
