Aquilegia canadensis L. (columbine), woodland wildflower, branched perennial 1-4' tall that arises from a stout rhizome, stem and basal leaves are stalked and 2 or 3 times ternately compound, leaflets are to 2" long and wide mostly with 3 lobes that are incised and with rounded tips, flowers are nodding to 1.6" long and terminate the branches, sepals (5) are red and the 5 petals have yellow blades and hollow red spurs that contain the nectar. stamens are numerous forming a column that project well beyond the calyx
