Ceanothus americanus L. (New Jersey-tea), prairie wildflower, shrub that is branching slender-stemmed up to 3' tall often appearing to be non-woody, leaves are alternate toothed along the edges and up to 4" long by 2" wide with curved edges pointy tips and soft hairy undersides, flowers are small and white occurring in rounded clusters at the ends of long stalks arising where the upper leaves join the stem, flowers are about 1/8" wide having a calyx with 5 triangular lobes that are folded inward, petals (5) are folded with thread-like bases, stamens are 5 erect, style is small 3-lobed and erect protruding from the flower center, common in dry to mesic prairies and rocky slopes and open upland woods
