Aronia melanocarpa var. elata Rehd. (tall black chokeberry), shrub growing to 3-5' tending to sucker profusely forming large colonies, leaves are alternate simple 1-3" long by 3/4-2" wide obovate abruptly acuminate or obtusish finely and regularly serrate lustrous dark green glabrous above with dark glands on the midrib lower surface light green glabrous, petiole is 1/4" or less, flowers are perfect white or slightly reddish (anthers) 1/3" dia borne in corybs that are 9-20 flowers
var. elata is taller (10-12' high) and has larger leaves, flowers and fruits
