Cotoneaster horizontalis Dcne. (rock cotoneaster), shrub, low flat (2-3' tall spreading 5-8') dense with horizontally spreading branches that almost form tiers and create a very unusual layered effect, leaves are alternate simple suborbicular to broad-elliptic 0.2-0.5" long by 0.1-0.3" wide acute at ends and mucronate at the apex lustrous dark green glabrous above and sparingly strigose-pubescent beneath, branching is a fishbone pattern, flowers are perfect pink, tiny (1/4") borne in May-June, fruits are tiny pomes bright red 0.20-0.25" dia borne enmasse during Aug.-Oct.
