Ptelea trifoliata L. (wafer-ash), leaves are alternate trifoliate, leaflets are ovate to elliptic-oblong 2.5-5.0" long narrowed at ends sometimes acuminate middle largest with a short petiole and the lateral ones oblique at the base smaller entire or obscurely crenulate sessile lustrous dark green above and glabrous below, petiole is 2-4" long, fruits are indehiscent samaras that are compressed broadly winged suborbicular 2-sided 0.6-1.0" diameter brownish at maturity rather conspicuous effective Aug. to Sept. persisting into winter
