Zanthoxylum americanum Mill (prickly-ash), shrub dioecious 15-25' that is prominently armed with 1/3-1/2" prickles, foliage is dark green and not susceptible to insect or disease problems, flowers are yellowish green occurring in axillary clusters before the leaves on the previous season's wood, fruit is a capsule that is 2-valved 0.2" long black maturing in July to Aug. and containing small lustrous black seeds, leaves are alternate compound-pinnate 6-8" long, leaflets are 5-11 (sometimes 13) often with 1 or 2 spines on the main stalk where the leaflets are attached 1.5-2.5" long ovate to oval lustrous dark green above pubescent below minutely or not serrated
