Acer saccharum ssp. nigrum (F.Michx.) Desmarais (black maple), bark is tremendously variable on this species, young trees develop a smooth gray-brown bark, with age the bark becomes deeply furrowed with long irregular thick plates or ridges sometimes quite scaly
