Acer rubrum ‘Autumn Flame’ (Autumn Flame red maple) PP2,377, flowers are red (rarely yellowish) March in April in dense clusters before the leaves, each flower on a reddish pedicel at first quite short but lengthening as the flower and fruit develop, stigmas and styles as well as the small petals are the showy part of the flower, male not as colorful but females expend so much carbohydrates in producing fruit that their foliage is reduced thereby making their flourish more spectacular than the males
