Parthenocissus quinquefolia (L.) Planch. (virginia creeper), leaves are alternate compound palmate (3) 5 leaflets each stalked (1/3" long) elliptic to obovate-oblong 1.5-4.0" long by 0.5-2.5" wide acuminate usually cuneate coarsely and often crenately serrate lustrous dark green above and glaucescent beneath, young growth bright waxy bronze to red, petiole is 1-4" long, first of all woody plants to turn color in fall, usually a purplish red to crimson-red which becomes quite noticeable in tall treetops
