Letter from C. E. Godshalk to H. A. Webber sharing information about the progress of four trees, Sequoia giganteum, being grown at the Arboretum after arriving from California. Three were set out in beds this spring and are doing well in the nursery under lath shade. Seven years ago he saw a very large Sequoia giganteum in Pennsylvania at the Painter Arboretum, and it was in fine condition. However, he was told recently that the tree had died. He won't be able to give more information about them until the trees have been at the Arboretum for about 10 years. His opinion is that they will have considerable trouble with them due to alternative freezing and thawing in the area.
