1928/01/29: Joy Morton to Clarence E. Godshalk (3.101485)
Date: January 29 1928Creator: Morton, Joy
Type: Document
Description:Letter from Joy Morton to Clarence E. Godshalk. Morton would like to fund botanist E. J. Palmer's research trip to the Davis Mountains, Texas. He has notified Palmer and needs Godshalk's help to arrange the payments. Palmer will drive his own car, so that should cut down on the expenses. Palmer asked if he could do some work for Morton Arboretum, but Teuscher did not reply because of unsettled conditions at Arnold Arboretum due to Dr. Sargent's death. Palmer produced a partial account in a letter in May, 1927. This trip would finish that research.

He approves the clearing out of some woods for a homesite, as a demonstration project.

1954/02/23: Sterling Morton to Clarence E. Godshalk (3.101915)
Date: February 23 1954Creator: Morton, Sterling
Type: Document
Description:Letter from Sterling Morton to Clarence E. Godshalk. For the article he is revising, he will mention the impact that Professor Sargent had on his father and the Arboretum plans. He acknowledges that his father and Mr. Symonds disagreed on some matters, and so will place less emphasis on that contribution. He notes that Sargent cautioned Joy Morton against creating a private park, but to keep in mind the basic purpose. He feels the idea of clearing out some woods to create a demonstration home site will have "extreme value to the people in our general region."

1955/03/29: Sterling Morton to C. E. Godshalk (3.104945)
Date: March 29 1955Creator: Morton, Sterling
Type: Document
Description:Letter from Sterling Morton to C. E. Godshalk sharing his reaction to Mr. Tikalsky's proposal about adding peonies to the Arboretum. He is sending Tikalsky's proposal, along with a copy of this letter, to Mrs. Zurcher who will distribute them to the other trustees. Morton's reaction is unfavorable since the Arboretum was created for woody plants, and peonies are perennials which seem out of line with the Arboretum's purpose. The trustees need to decide whether or not they want to get into perennial gardens as well as woody plants.
