Description:Platanthera ciliaris (L.) Lindl. (yellow fringed orchid), prairie wildflower, erect perennial 16-40" tall that rises from fleshy tuberous roots, leaves (2-4) are borne on the stem that are glossy green keeled sheathing lance-shaped 2-12" long progressively reduced in size upward, stem has a terminal dense to loose cylindrical raceme of 30-60 bright orange flowers, sepals are ovate about 0.33" long with upper ones concave arching forward and lateral ones spreading, petals are linear about 0.25" long, lip is about 0.8" long and narrow and deeply fringed on the margin, the slender basal spur is 1.0-1.4" long directed downward

Description:Platanthera leucophaea (Nutt.) Lindl. (prairie white fringed orchid), very rare prairie wildflower, stout erect orchids growing up to 30" tall with smooth hairless stems and leaves, leaves are alternate up to 10" long with bases strongly clasping the stem and tips that are tapered to long points, flowers are in clusters along the tops of the stems often with more than 20 per plant, each flower has 3 rounded whitish sepals about 1/2" long and 2 rounded creamy white upper petals that are usually slightly larger than the sepals and a distinctive creamy white lower petal called a lip which can be over 1" long and wide and is divided into 3 narrow lobes each of which is fringed with long narrow segments, flowers have a downward-pointing tube-like spur which can be over 2" long, this plant is federally listed as threatened, notice the protective cage

Don (green fringed orchid), woodland wildflower, smooth erect perennial 12-32" tall that arises from fleshy roots, leaves (2-5) are borne on the stem that are green keeled sheathing elliptic to lanceolate 3-10" long progressively reduced in size upward, stem has a terminal loose to dense raceme of 20-40 greenish flowers, sepals are ovate to oblong less than 0.33" long with the upper concave and arching forward and the lateral spreading, petals are linear-oblong less than 0.33" long, lip is about 0.7" long and is 3-lobed deeply cleft and divided into filiform segments with the slender basal spur of about 1" long curved and directed downward
