Constraints to Tree Growth Imposed by Urban Soil Alkalinity (3.100281)
Date: February 1990Creator: Ware, George
Type: Article
Description:The selecting of trees for urban planting in the Chicago region requires attention to two serious limitations—soil alkalinity and clayiness. This region has extensive areas of soil derived from alkaline glacial till. Urbanization often brings about a mixing of surface and deeper material producing a tree-root environment scarcely conducive to proper growth. The following discussions deal mainly with situations in the Chicago area, but in-formation and ideas are thought to have applicability to urban areas elsewhere.

Preference for and Suitability of Asian Elm Species and Hybrids for the Adult Elm Leaf Beetle (Coleoptera : Chrysomelidae) (3.100288)
Date: May 12 1996Creator: Miller, Fredric D.
Type: Article
Description:Selected elms Ulmus spp. and their hybrids growing at The Morton Arboretum, Lisle, IL, were evaluated in laboratory bioassays for feeding preference and suitability for the adult elm leaf beetle. No-choice and multiple choice studies revealed that the hybrid U.japonica X U. wilsoniana Accolade was the least suitable for feeding and reproduction by the elm leaf beetle.

Chromosome Numbers of New Ulmus (elm) Taxa Introduced from China (3.100289)
Date: March 21 – June 20 1997Type: Article
Description:In recent years, a number of "new" elm taxa have been introduced into the United States from China. Experimentation on resistance of these taxa to Resistance of several other taxa to insects and diseases is needed. Preliminary to such experimentation, it is desirable to know the chromosome numbers of these taxa. If any of these new Chinese introductions proved to be tetraploid, they might be more crossable with American elm. Therefore, chromosome counts were made on all of these taxa, none of which have been reported previously.

Description:The objective of the described study was to conduct an initial screening of Asian elms and their hybrids for adult Japanese beetle feeding preference in the laboratory and in the field. The findings will contribute to selection and future potential of these elms, and provide a clearer direction for an ongoing comprehensive elm breeding program for Dutch elm disease, elm leaf beetle, and elm leaf miner resistance.

Feeding Preference for Selected Tilia Spp. and Cultivars by the Adult Japanese Beetle (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) (3.100292)
Date: May 1999Creator: Miller, Fredric D.
Type: Article
Description:The reported study was initiated to evaluate horticulturally desirable Tilia spp. for feeding preference by the adult Japanese beetle. A secondary objective of the study was to determine if leaf pubescence is a factor in feeding preference. Using mean percent leaf area consumed and mean dried fecal pellet weights as measures of susceptibility, the Asian species of T. petiolaris, T. oliveri, T.chinensis, and T. japonica show promise for partial resistance to Japanese beetles.
