Description:
Aesculus glabra Willd. (Ohio buckeye), a horizontal view of a seedling sprout. Toward the left side of the photo, a dark sphere, the buckeye fruit, can be seen, with the sprout emerging. One end of the sprout remains in the fruit, and extends downward (to the right in the photo). This side of the sprout begins with a darker, more textured appearance, sports a short root bundle, and then proceeds, becoming thinner and lighter in appearance. The end of the sprout freed from the fruit (to the left in the photo) is thicker, whitish and turgid, with a beginning leaf structure at its tip.
