Van Der Linden joined the staff as Curator of the Woods. Charles Lewis, Horticulturalist and Collection Group Administrator, addressed The American Association of Science. The Nature Artists' Guild of The Morton Arboretum was started to encourage natural history art.

This issue features events such as the upcoming Yuletide Celebration, Members' Ski Program, a Winter Ecology Walk, and Winter Bird Walks. There is also a lecture about Learning to Live With Expressways. The Great Lakes Forest Soils Conference, organized by Patrick Kelsey, Arboretum Research Soil Scientist, and Richard Hootman, Research Soil Specialist, took place with topics emphasizing soil development in undisturbed areas and disturbed or urbanized areas of the Arboretum problems associated with the growth of woody plants on "urban" soils; and the management of soils and vegetation in areas disturbed by construction. The Arboretum also received grants from the Institute of Museum Services, The Robert R. McCormick Charitable Trust; Chicago White Metal Charitable Foundation; Burroughs Corporation; AT&T Foundation; Bell Information Systems; Household Finance Corporation; Staley Continental, Inc.; W.W. Grainger, Inc.; The John D. and Catherin T. MacArthur Foundation; the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education; and Allied-Signal Inc.
