Description:Letter from Joy Morton to C.E. Godshalk wishing him success with his turkeys. They are enjoying the mild weather, but it is too hot during the day. They expect to be home in early April. He hopes they get a reasonable price for the cows. Sterling and his wife visited them, and they had a nice visit. They would both like to be home at Thornhill now; there is no place like it.

Description:Letter from Joy Morton to Clarence E. Godshalk, from Palm Beach. He thinks they will get a lot of good out of Teuscher's trip. He's hoping the trial of the mowing machine will prove to save money on mowing. "Don't overlook the fact that I want all forest plots you can add to our private collection. That is my hobby, so be governed accordingly." Pleased you like the new gardener. Looking forward to fine gardens this summer. Sterling and his wife were here before their trip to Nassau and we had a good visit.

Description:Letter from Sterling Morton to Clarence E. Godshalk. Your letter of April 16 was a "most interesting and understanding letter and really makes me more willing to assume the responsibilities than I had before." It is all right to charge the roof bill of $200, the tank bill of $300, and the underground cable bill of $275 to the Chairman's Fund. In the future as emergencies arise and I'm not available, you may use this fund. You have employed the 15 regular men during the winter. I will add $1000 to the labor budget for the summer schoolboys to clean up. "The Arboretum will be receiving additional income from my sister's estate to go into the general fund." He is in favor of the forestry plots, perhaps using some of the farmland that is less productive, to demonstrate not only good practices but bad uses. This would be useful if they undertake plant pathology. It should include hardwood, softwood and conifers, with each plot having several acres. Mrs. Morton hopes to be well enough for their trip abroad. He details his flight when the pilot flew them down into the Grand Canyon.

Description:Letter from Sterling Morton to Clarence E. Godshalk. Mrs. Morton has been asked to write an article for the local [Santa Barbara] Garden Club. He knows there must be several in a file, especially dealing with Mrs. Cudahy's incumbency. [Pencilled at the top: Sept. 1952, p.3, Bull. Garden Club of America]. Or, the article could talk of future plans for maintenance, research, etc. Or would this be premature? What is the cost of the Skilsaw and generator? He has 600-700 feet of hedge that is currently cut by hand and that equipment would help. He wishes everyone a Merry Christmas.

Description:Letter from Sterling Morton to Clarence E. Godshalk. He approves of the planting and research project. He suggests that for demonstrations the Barberry and Amur Privet hedges are more affordable than the superior Japanese yew. Seeding new farmland will help when visitors eventually walk the property. Delay of an equipment demonstration is a good idea. He suggests a nursery of plants and seedlings that could be cultivated by mechanical means that would provide replacements and for future land planting at an economical price. He is waiting for information from Winpower about the problems he is having with the motor. He is enclosing a dollar and requests a package of the note card with Mrs. Watt's sketches. He is charmed by them and will use them for short notes and maybe Christmas cards. He and Mrs. Morton have suffered with a virus infection. Because of that they cancelled their trip around the world. They will come to Chicago in March and then go to Europe, and then to the International Chamber of Commerce meeting in Tokyo in the spring.

Description:Letter from Sterling Morton to C.E. Godshalk saying he ran into Pearl Chase, and she had kind things to say about her visit with Godshalk. He encloses the article from the News-Press about Godshalk's talk; Morton thought it was excellent. The response to the talk makes Morton believe they are on the right track with their approach of sharing research that is applicable to the everyday homeowner. He hopes Godshalk had a successful trip up north. Morton is glad he was able to attend a few sessions at the conference and see the equipment. He went by Ott's hardware store to see the Gravely tractor they have for sale. It is in excellent shape. He will test it out to make sure it is working properly, and if so, will gift it to the Arboretum. If there is an infinite delay in shipping, they will go ahead and get a new machine. He says it was a pleasure having Godshalk with them, and he particularly enjoyed their drives. The record includes the newspaper clippings along with a short handwritten note.

Description:Letter from Sterling Morton to Clarence E. Godshalk. He is sorry that Godshalk has been held up by a strike. He hopes the fire door between the old and new buildings will be installed for the dedication. The lobby, general office, curved hall and lecture room are important to be finished for viewers. He is sorry for the overhead door trouble at South Farm. He had to install a motor and remote control for Mrs. Morton to open their door at Lake Forest, but that shouldn't be needed at South Farm. What should be done with the Jaffray house? He likes the idea of having independent contractors [Price] do the tree trimming as opposed to the full wages of an employee [Sharpless]. Ask the Salt Company to donate an addressograph machine that they no longer are using rather than buy one for the Arboretum. He is surprised that the Dutch elm disease has taken hold in the Arboretum, but is assured that Godshalk will identify, remove and burn them as quick as possible. He questions how the beetles can travel so far so fast. Mrs. Zurcher is working on plans for the September 27 dedication. He is pleased that she is getting so energetically involved. He hopes that Morton family member stay involved for years to come.

Description:Letter from Sterling Morton to Clarence E. Godshalk. He is sending a Contaflex camera, carrying case and instructions. It has a sky filter, and should take excellent black and white photos. For larger projects he suggests that Godshalk talk with other camera experts. The workmen that Godshalk has assigned to the Morton's Lake Forest installation have been excellent. He suggests they take out the only-good soil in the beds and replace it with black dirt to be ready for Morton's planting ideas. Compared with the other problems they have had in the construction of the house, he and Mrs. Morton have been very pleased with the landscapers. Mr. Synnestvedt will continue working on Monday, planting the euonymus. Morton will visit the site on Saturday.

Description:Letter from Sterling Morton to Clarence E. Godshalk. Mrs. Morton will be giving a talk on the Arboretum to the Santa Barbara Garden Club. He requests a large variety of 35 mm slides, showing Thornhill and other buildings, in all seasons, the hedge garden, a map of the grounds, and some forestry plots. He will return the slides afterward. He suggests wording for the slides "A great outdoor museum" "Founded in 1922" "by Joy Morton". He has used Title-Craft in Chicago for word slides in the past, but he thinks that Godshalk has equipment and expertise to create these slides for the presentation instead.

He feels the person who took the photo of the large plaque did a superb job, and it should be the opening slide for all lectures. He has never liked the medallion, and he would like to have the slide replaced with one made from the Schneider etching. He is transcribing Mrs. Morton's talk. He would like to give up the idea of a admission charge for a year or so until they get the general plan of traffic settled. He would like to charge for classes which are for individual benefit, but not those that are of a general educational or civic value.

Description:Letter from Sterling Morton to C. E. Godshalk with questions for Godshalk for Mrs. Morton's upcoming garden club talk. He would like further information about juneberry. What is the size of the Arboretum? He would like 25 of the folders that are handed out at the Administration Building sent to them. What is the official title of the organization that sponsors Channel 11? He would like a slide of the Rustic Building if Godshalk has one that does it justice. He also asks for other pictures of the hedge collection; he doesn't like the ones already sent. Her lecture is April 1, so Godshalk should have the slides back soon after that. He would like Godshalk to let him know if he needs any of the slides back sooner.

He has projected the slides they are thinking of offering for sale several times; he will pick the five or ten he likes best and loan Godshalk some of his. He wants to put the folders on every second or third chair for Mrs. Morton's garden club lecture. Since the Zurchers have moved, they feel at loose ends; perhaps they will buy a place in the city, too. He like the idea of putting the Arboretum on film. He goes into detail about his opinion on the charges for classes and tours. He asks for botanical and common names of plants not usually used for hedges that would work as hedges.

Description:Letter from Sterling Morton to Clarence E. Godshalk. He remembers that on this date in 1912 he was taken to the hospital with typhoid. He's "rapidly gaining" from his latest attack. He asks if the library has any books on geometrical designs for formal plantings. The frogs have made a mess of their small pool and they are considering replacing it with some design. Mrs. Morton caught eight frogs which she took to the big pond and watched the blue gills devour them. He sends along a slide of gardens in Isola Bella, Italy that inspire him. He continues in great detail as to the existing space and what he envisions there instead. Please mail him any related books, and the slide. He hopes that good weather will give the Arboretum progress on housing, roads, and all the other work ahead for the year.

Description:Letter from Sterling Morton to C. E. Godshalk sharing his thoughts on acquiring the Herboth and Mulacek properties. Morton noticed a large ad in the Tribune for Valley View Estates with The Morton Arboretum featured in the foreground. He thinks the area may flood even with the new bridge and channel. The lots in the Skokie District flooded until Ickes got the Skokie Lagoons Project underway to improve the drainage. He gives his thoughts about the Herboth life tenancy deal. He is glad the housing project and the bridge at 53 are moving along. He talks about his frog and snail issues. They are getting their home ready to be part of a garden club tour.

Description:Letter from C. E. Godshalk to Sterling Morton quoting part of an air mail letter he received from Dr. Righter, Chief of the California Forest and Range Experiment Station, Berkeley, California. Dr. Righter asks Godshalk if he thinks Morton will be interested in donating funds for them to acquire additional land. Godshalk told Morton he thinks it is a worthy cause if he is so inclined. They are staking and grading new roads in the Arboretum. The new cyclone fence along the north side of the toll road is being built. The toll road is practically done. Ed Myers, the Arboretum's head mechanic, died on Labor Day. Mrs. Watts arrive back safely from her European trip. They look forward to hearing about her trip and seeing her slides. Godshalk hopes to attend the American Horticultural Council Meeting in Williamsburg and also visit several arboretums and a New York super highway.

He states he is willing to donate to the California [Forest and Range Experiment Station] for them to purchase land, but the donation will have to wait until he returns from Europe. He is glad Mrs. Watts had a good trip. Since Mrs. Morton is giving a lecture on European Pubic Gardens, perhaps she can borrow some of her slides. He infers the housing matter is going well, and he is sure he will see great changes. He suggests that Godshalk visit the arboretums in New York and New England before the conference; the weather will be better. Description:Letter from [C. E. Godshalk] to Sterling Morton stating the new Arboretum map is about ready. However, they do not have a name for the new lake located in the meadow north east of the Arboretum Center. Possible names include: Meadow Lake (Tony suggested the name, and Godshalk likes that name very much), Center Lake, Lake Sterling, or Mirror Lake (due to the small amount of water in it). He hopes Morton can help them decide on the name soon, so they can label the new map. He hopes Mrs. Morton is feeling better.

Description:Letter from Sterling Morton to C. E. Godshalk relating that they had to cancel their trip to Africa due to Mrs. Morton's digestive issues. Martha and Fritz have gone on the trip. Godshalk has received copies of the letters Morton wrote to Ed Baker and Holabird referring to the items of repair work he think should be done. He agrees with Godshalk that the details omitted from the bid should be covered. He told Godshalk to update Bob Ward on these matters if he hasn't already done so. Morton believes it is important to have air conditioning in the big room as well as the other classrooms. Morton is waiting on the terrace wall until he can see it staked out. He thinks the large black and white pebbles in the pebble concrete will look best. He asks Godshalk's opinion on using crushed stone instead; maintenance would be much less. He agrees that granite steps would be ideal, but much more expensive than the Lannon stone. He agrees with Godshalk that wooden steps, replaced at regular intervals, would be best. He is glad Godshalk agrees with adding a low wall to the south terrace at Thornhill. He asks Godshalk's opinion on the wall specifications. Morton is glad the work is going well on the new road. He thinks there will probably be a wait for the steel beams if Godshalk doesn't already have them due to a possible company showdown. Morton goes on to say that Godshalk should suggest to the media that they discourage visitors to the Arboretum this fall due to all the construction going on. Morton hopes Godshalk has provided for adding trees to the parking lots; Old Orchard's parking lot looks good. Morton hopes to get to Chicago for a short visit before too long, but they may need to stay in Santa Barbara if Mrs. Morton needs surgery.

Description:Letter from Sterling Morton to C. E. Godshalk saying he is interested in the Floriade to be held in Amsterdam, and he believes that the Arboretum should probably have an exhibit there, going on to describe what that exhibit might contain. Since the Arboretum doesn't have the funds for this project, he would be willing to fund it from his trust or personally if it is a reasonable amount. Morton would like additional information about the exhibit plan and the site in Amsterdam. He believes Godshalk should attend the show as part of his trip to visit European botanic gardens the next year. If Godshalk and/or his wife doesn't have any facility with French or German, he suggests they hire a botanical student who can drive and translate. He might find one through the botanical societies abroad. Mrs. Morton is making very rapid progress, so they may travel to Europe for a short trip in the fall.

Description:Letter from Sterling Morton to C. E. Godshalk sharing information about his use of the Contax camera. Mrs. Morton has recovered from her digestive issues, but is now under the weather from another issue; they may not travel to Chicago on the 29th as planned. He used the slate or granite on his Lake Forest front driveway. It has a tendency to move under automobiles, but should stay put for foot traffic. It should have a good base under it. They have fine gravel on their paths in Santa Barbara, but it tends to grind up under traffic, including foot traffic. He asks Godshalk to put in small stakes outlining the proposed terrace. He agrees with Godshalk on where the opening in the wall should be. He is not pleased with the idea of using aluminum brackets on the concrete to hold the wooden treads of the proposed steps from the terrace outside the Rotunda. He offers alternative suggestions. It's perfectly all right with Morton if the revolving door extends into the Thornhill lobby. He is pleased the overpass is coming along. He didn't know they were building a swimming pool for staff when they built Arbor Lake; he hopes proper precautions have been taken to protect children. Jim Donnelly (Illinois Manufacturers' Association) send Morton an article from the Lisle "Advertiser" that spoke nicely about the Arboretum. Morton would like any additional articles in the series sent to him. He has written to Godshalk about the Amsterdam exhibit; he will make his contribution from his personal funds.

Description:Letter from Sterling Morton to Clarence E. Godshalk. Mrs. Morton had another attack similar to the one last year that caused them to cancel their African trip. They need to remove the weak section of her intestine, and it's safer when she is well, and not as an emergency. He is not sure when they will be able to leave California. He understands about the overhead bridge at Ogden and Route 53. If the contractor can clean out Lake Marmo and dig a settling basin to the west of it, we can keep the land in its present shape. The fact that the dam has been opened since the fall has allowed the water to drain out so that it's not quite as soggy. He approves this deal, if Godshalk can get it.

Description:Letter from Sterling Morton to Clarence E. Godshalk. He's sorry to hear of Mrs. Watts [medical] misfortune. He will write her in the hospital. He is in favor of working with Dr. Carleton for students to work at the Arboretum in "a practical manner." Work with Ed [Baker] to make sure the "Arboretum doesn't get the short end of the stick". He saw the sketch plan for the Exhibit in Amsterdam. He is pleased that Morton Arboretum is well represented. He's also glad that Godshalk will get his long-awaited trip. Morton plans to attend the International Chamber of Commerce Congress in Copenhagen in the spring of 1961. The steel for the river bridge on Route 53 is in place, so with good weather the concrete can begin to complete the underpasses and approaches to let the Arboretum settle down to normal. He hopes the contractors will take fill from Lake Marmo, but the silt there might not suit their needs. Mrs. Morton is home from the hospital and is improving.

Description:Letter from Sterling Morton to Clarence E. Godshalk, who is on vacation in London. Morton spent time at the Arboretum, planning for locations of gates and toll booths. Ed [Baker] said that the "map shelters" need to wait until later, to be "a little careful on expenses." "So that you can be thinking these matters over [while you are on vacation], I go into some detail." In great detail, he tells locations for gates, fences, roads, entrance roads, parking spaces, traffic flow, signs and more. Much of this work is underway, but he will wait until Godshalk returns before finalizing the plan because "you have given this matter careful thought for a long time, and you may have good reasons for changing some of the suggestions above." Ed suggests steel pipes, filled with concrete and painted white to channel drivers at "diverging roads."
In a handwritten note at the top of page 1, Morton mentions that the Ritz has no connecting single rooms on the quiet side, so they might try the Stafford their next time. He requests that Godshalk ask if the Stafford has 2 single connecting rooms on a quiet side for September 7. Please bring a plan of the hotel also. They have stayed at the Savoy many times but it's not near the kind of shopping Mrs. Morton wants to do.
