Linda Sanford joined the Education staff as Curator of Youth Education, and Dr. Gary Watson joined the Research Group as Plant Pathologist. Dr. Frank Pascoe and Mrs. Linda Meyers were hired as Administrator and Secretary, respectively. The Arboretum received grants from the Institute of Museum Services Conservation Project and the Rice Foundation.

Clarence Godshalk, Director Emeritus of The Morton Arboretum, passed away on April 20, 1988. Daniel Peterkin, Jr., Trustee of The Morton Arboretum and retired Chairman and President of Morton-Norwich Products Inc. died on May 11, 1988. The Library marked its 25th anniversary. Grants were received from the Nalco Foundation, Dr. Ralph and Marian Falk Medical Research Foundation, A. Montgomery Ward Foundation, and The Institute of Museum Services (IMS).
