1955/08/25: E. H. Baker to Sterling Morton (3.104965)

Description:Letter from Edward H. Baker, Jr. to Sterling Morton about South Farm Buildings. Howard Fisher has prepared detailed plans and specifications for the buildings. Baker suggested we only submit these to Carroll Construction so that we might learn from the results before we submit to multiple bidders. Enclosed is a sketch. He details each of the 10 buildings, its purpose and the amount of remodeling needed. Buildings 1, 3, 8 and 10 involve new construction. The bid from Carroll Construction was for $170,830.00 and involved site work, paving and parking lot. Baker feels that prices for buildings 1, 8 and 10 were reasonable. The rest was excessive. Carroll specializes in new construction with known costs. In remodeling he had to build in extra funds for unknowns. Based on this, Baker met with Howard Fisher and they decided: 1) Have Godshalk with Arboretum men and equipment prepare for construction of buildings 1, 8 and 10. After this construction is complete, he can finish the site work for the remaining buildings. 2) Negotiate a contract with Carroll Construction to build the shells for buildings 1, 8 and 10. 3) Negotiate a bid for the mechanicals and pay Carroll 5% for supervising their installation. 4) After new construction is finished, have Clarence do the remodeling of buildings 7 and 9. 5) Hold the remodeling of buildings 2, 4, 5 and 6 and construction of building 3 until later. Baker thinks that Clarence's time and efforts should go into managing the Arboretum and planning for future programs. A small contractor could be hired to oversee the remodeling of buildings 7 and 9. Baker would like construction on buildings 1, 8 and 10 to be complete before winter. Building 8 will hold the heating system for buildings 7-10. Building 10 will have the hydraulic lift and machine shop. He is requesting the Trustees to appropriate $80,000 for construction and mechanicals for these 3 buildings.

Description:Letter from Sterling Morton to Clarence E. Godshalk. Southern Pacific are picking up the tractor today. It will come in 3 parts which you can assemble. He gives further details on shipping charges and wood packing. Thanks for your copy of your talk out here. People are still talking about the Arboretum. Dr. Carter is working on a link between soil nutrients and Dutch elm disease. That would be wonderful if Morton Arboretum could be connected with that. Ed Baker wrote about the plans for South Farm. With the high cost, he suggests that Carroll handle new construction only. Godshalk's men can take care of demolition and interior remodeling. He doesn't want outside people to be paid more than Morton staff. He'll leave any higher paid work to a contractor, even if he has to pay the contractor more.

Description:Letter from Sterling Morton to Clarence E. Godshalk. Go ahead with your trip up north. Dr. Miller, President of [Northwestern] University will arrange a tour for you of the [Morton Medical] Research Building. He is familiar with the Sunbeam sprinkler. The model that rolls up is cumbersome because the grass clippings stick to the hose and make it difficult to roll. The model that doesn't roll up is satisfactory. It will go around corners, and he shares his solution. Mr. Baker mentions that Hattis is drawing up figures for an underground sprinkler system. Some are better than other; advantages and disadvantages to each. He's glad to see the construction progress on the Administration Building. He's glad they are going ahead with clearing sites at the South Farm while Carroll's equipment is there. He will return to Chicago for the fall, until December.

Description:Letter from Sterling Morton to C. E. Godshalk stating he doesn't like the new sketch for the proposed architectural feature at the end of the hedge garden vista any more than he did the first one. He believes they need a fairly heavy and massive structure; he would be in favor of putting a fence around it. He will try to get his ideas across to the architect. He asks Godshalk if he knows of a chemical that can be put in small holes in stumps that would rot them. He wrote Mrs. Zurcher about the work he has authorized at Thornhill; he hopes Carroll will get going on it immediately. He thinks the doors will take more designing.

Description:Letter from C. E. Godshalk to Sterling Morton stating Morton's letter is exactly what he wanted to use to answer Roy Nordine and Dr. Carleton about the proposed training school. Godshalk has done little about it due to time constraints. He has been thinking of something more along the lines of the program at Longwood Gardens where they take on 9-10 students, and they rotate them throughout the organization. They had a final inspection from the State Highway Department on the Route 53 job, and all was ok. They hope to have Lake Marmo cleaned by the end of next week, ready to deepen it. The settling basin work has been going well. Tony has the parking area nearly ready for the curb man. Holabird & Root says the gate and Control House drawings will be ready by August 1. Mr. Boehmer will have the iron gates ready in time. Mr. Ward met with Mr. Carroll to get the work on Thornhill completed before fall classes.

Description:Letter from C. E. Godshalk to Sterling Morton saying he has been busy with spring work and checking the drawings from Holabird and Root. The contract was given to Carroll Construction Company; he thinks they will do a good job as they did good work on the Thornhill Building. Jones has accepted a down payment on the eleven acres. The Arboretum is at least two weeks earlier in the blooming season. They have started test fertilizer and mulch plots. They are also running tests with salt on grass and trees. They have started an area showing the public how to grow fruit trees and bushes. They had one of the largest crowds ever this past Sunday. They took pictures to show what the traffic is like during busy times. He had to get after the Howard Fischer outfit, as not much seemed to be getting done. Having the equipment they need is a great advantage.

Description:Letter from C. E. Godshalk to Sterling Morton complimenting him on the success of his Garden Club Meeting talk. He's glad Morton is impressed with the Johnson land. Godshalk plans to assist nature on that land keeping it a beautiful place to walk on created paths, giving visitors the effect of a natural undisturbed woodland. Areas will be marked off for Mrs. Watts to study. The plan for Morton's place seems to fit the site perfectly. Godshalk would like to see it someday. The foundations are being poured for the greenhouse and the South Farm buildings. The flame photometer arrived. He is beginning to get things ready for the upcoming trustees meeting.

Description:Letter from C. E. Godshalk to Sterling Morton stating the new laboratory is not yet complete due to labor issues. The upstairs and the offices are done, but the offices are being used for storage. The back of the lecture room and the greenhouses are also finished. At South Farm, they expect to move into the new shop Monday. Arboretum staff have almost completed the remodeling of the old tool shed. The elm pruning is pretty much done, and he convinced Mr. Price to offer a discount due to the volume of the work. Three elm trees on the Johnson property that had Dutch elm disease were removed and burned. The Arboretum may take the Salt Company's old addressograph. Mrs. Zurcher and he settled many decorating details this past weekend.

Description:Letter from C. E. Godshalk to Sterling Morton detailing the issues he sees with the plans from the Carroll Construction Co. bid Morton sent to him. The work on the road is going pretty well. The river bridge will be done two to three weeks after the steel strike ends. They are trying to work out some sort of system to handle the fall traffic since the underpass and Route 53 work won't be completed by that time. At the Arboretum they are building new cement curbs around the new ten minute parking lot and blacktopping new and repaired roads. He wishes Morton and his wife a pleasant time on their upcoming trip.
