The North Ash Natural Area is a 3.9-acre grove on the Arboretum's East Side along the Main Route between parking areas P9 and P10. The area had been used by the Arboretum to preserve ash tree species until the late 1990s when non-native ash trees were removed, leaving only native ash trees. By 2012, the remainder of the ash tree collection had been decimated by the Emerald Ash Borer infestation. By the time the survey was conducted, many prairie species had been introduced to the area.
