Description:Letter from E. L. Kammerer in response to Mr. L. V. Bower's inquiry. Mr. Kammerer writes that it's difficult to pinpoint which Pine Mr. Bower was referring to in his letter, because many have been naturalized at Dune State Park. Mr. Kammerer writes that legend has it that a Mr. Douglass, a "pioneer nurseryman," scattered a mix of Pine seeds in that area around 85 years prior and White, Austrian, Scotch, Table Mountain, and Pitch Pines all grow there. Mr. Kammerer notes that Austrian Pine (Pinus nigra Austriaca) has done especially well in that area and might be what Mr. Bower was referring to. Mr. Kammerer also notes that Pinus strobus and Pinus banksiana are indigenous to Northern Illinois. Additionally, Mr. Kammerer writes that Tsuga caroliniana specimens are established at the Arboretum, but that they are less hardy to heat and drought than Canadian Hemlock.
