Clematis recta L. (ground clematis), not a vining plant at all but has a sprawling bushy habit, quickly bursts out of the ground in the spring with foliage of an unusual smoky-purple shade fading to green by mid summer, flowers are fragrant little white star-shaped early summer, requires staking or plants can be allowed to sprawl through an adjacent shrub, 35-47" tall with 23-27" spread
