Date: December 14 1954Creator: Morton, Sterling
Type: Document
Description:Letter from Sterling Morton to the Trustees of the Morton Arboretum.
The architectural firm of Holabird & Root & Burgee are working on an addition to the Administration Building, to include laboratories, offices, and an adjoining propagating greenhouse. He feels this would be a suitable memorial to our late Chairman. Feeling that the active members of the Board of Trustees should in addition to their general duties, have special interest in particular phases of the work I am appointing committees as follows: Finances and Investments: Mr. King and Mr. Zurcher - Grounds, Roads, Plantings. etc. : Mr. Peterkin and Mr. Zurcher - Building and House Committee: Mrs. Zurcher and Mr. Baker. The duties of the first two committees are, of course, obvious. The third committee will have general supervision of the furnishings, decoration, etc. of the Administration and Thornhill Buildings. In addition, it will from time to time inspect all other buildings of the Arboretum, make recommendations on their usefulness. maintenance, repairs, etc. It will also be its province to recommend new structures, if needed, and to consult on the design thereof.
He welcomes recommendations of a suitable person to fill the vacancy of Chairman, and he spells out the qualifications to include residence in the Chicago area and interest in the basic objectives of the Arboretum.

1954/09/28: Sterling Morton to Holabird & Root & Burgee (3.101927)
Date: August 28 1954Creator: Morton, Sterling
Type: Document
Description:Letter from Sterling Morton to Holabird & Root & Burgee. He received the preliminary drawings covering the new bronze memorial panel for the lobby of the Administration Building, new marble memorial panel for the Thornhill House entrance lobby, drawings of new metal frames for doors and windows on the south wall of the main room of Thornhill House, and also suggested reroofing on the porch of the Godshalk residence. He thinks double pane windows at Thornhill should reduce the cost of heating. He offers suggestion for changes for the doors and transoms. The plastic roof on the porch at Godshalk residence will let in more light than canvas would. Copies sent to Godshalk and Mrs. Zurcher. If Mrs. Zurcher has comments on the memorial panels he will consider them.

1955/08/31: Clarence E. Godshalk to Sterling Morton (3.104969)
Date: August 31 1955Creator: Godshalk, Clarence E.
Type: Document
Description:Letter from Clarence E. Godshalk to Sterling Morton. When the Gravely tractor arrives, he will have the local representative bring out the attachments they want to try. Sunbeam sent one of their tape crawling sprinklers out to try. He wants to compare it to National Manufacturing and General Tractor. The Sunbeam features: 1) a dial to set the diameter of spray from 5-50 feet. 2) anchor the tape out 100 feet and the sprinkler will follow and shut off when it reaches the anchor. 3) strong pulling power on the hose. 4) at large diameter the spray arches over shrubs. 5) it will not go in curves, as the tape must be straight. The first floor concrete has been poured for the Administration Building, and the chimney has been taken down to the second floor ceiling to prepare for the roof. Sites for South Farm building are prepared. He is making a study of the entire Arboretum because permanent boundaries could be near, for the first time. He has a map to present to the Trustees, but wants to discuss it first with Morton. Godshalk and his wife will not be able to attend the dedication of the building at Northwestern, but he looks forward to seeing it at a later date.

1955/09/13: Clarence E. Godshalk to Sterling Morton (3.104970)
Date: September 13 1955Creator: Godshalk, Clarence E.
Type: Document
Description:Letter from Clarence E. Godshalk to Sterling Morton. Updates on construction: in the Administration building, the second floor of lab and offices are ready to pour; new roof is covered with boards; no work yet on South Farm (with no union men working there yet, he has a man doing some demolition.) They are hauling a lot of fill to the Lacey land, where the tree filling experiments are being made. The mowing and paths are done for fall visitors. Mr. Rex in New Jersey has studies of elm nutrition, but makes no connection with Dutch elm disease. He cites Mr. McCoy who says that nutrients in the leaves vary greatly with the time the leaves are collected, therefore the Arboretum will need to set up consistent standards. He is waiting for replies from Dr. Banfield and Dr. Swingle before sending Web to Davis, California. Web is learning about different flame photometers. Godshalk is trying various crawling sprinklers. The Gravely tractor has not yet arrived.

1935/12/11: [Norma Bryan] to Evelyn M. Rasch (3.109135)
Date: December 11 1935Creator: Bryan, Norma A.
Type: Document
Description:Letter from Norma Bryan to Evelyn M. Rasch. She spoke with Mrs. Cudahy about the idea of sending out announcements of the new Administration Building to a broader group. She was not in favor of it. Mr. Dow didn't think the budget could handle printing more announcements. They were very interested in any lists of libraries, universities, high schools, nurseries, magazine editors that Rasch may have. She would like to add any contacts for her own similar lists to use for Bulletin subscriptions. She again requests the list of Cook County Cemetery Men to add to her list of 500 before the "big drive".
