1921/01/15: Sterling Morton to Joy Morton (3.92104)
Date: January 15 1921Creator: Morton, Sterling
Type: Document
Description:Have heard nothing from Jean or Mr. Garden about the house; since studies are being made, something will develop in future. Morton is looking into the Arnold Arboretum especially through correspondence with Mr. Sargent, the director; Morton advises a visit in spring; the Arnold is easily accessible from Copley Square. Dan says that orders for the salt business are picking up, meaning that the worst period is over. Dan's dog Pepper was stolen, but was recognized while walking in the park by the Peterkins. Not much business except teletype and Western Union who is getting out their annual budget for Morse apparatus for which we are figuring out what we can do. Machines doing well at Equitable; we'll send our machines there to swap with others which we'll change over. American Can circuit continues to give good services; we're also considering banks in New York with a large number of branches. A number of devices has been submitted to us for manufacture; one promising one is an office device for banks and mercantile houses which stamps an endorsement on checks. In our investigations we have found they are getting excellent results; there is the possibility of marketing from 5,000 to 25,000 of these machines. We have delivered several hundred air gauges to agencies; by summer we should turn out several thousand a week. We feel there is a good market for the teletype. The new schedule of 48 hours a week is now effective; employees appreciate that we are not cutting the weekly amount received. Machine trades are very dull in all parts of the country, especially in Detroit with the auto industry. The family are all well.
