1960/08/03: Sterling Morton to Clarence E. Godshalk (3.105108)
Date: August 3 1960Creator: Morton, Sterling
Type: Document
Description:Letter from Sterling Morton to Clarence E. Godshalk. He will forward copies of the recommendations for Floyd Swink, from the Chicago Academy of Science and University of Illinois. He hopes that Dr. Thieret of Chicago Natural History Museum will put his recommendation in writing. Morton would like the Education Committee to consider whether Godshalk can approach Swink about a job teaching classes. Morton is not concerned that Swink doesn't have a PhD. He is pleased that the Cushman Trucksters are useful, and will save wear and tear on roads and large trucks. He's sorry that American-Marietta Company has been slow about getting the foundation for the columns done. Godshalk has his permission to find a local concrete man to help. Call Mr. Ward to speed them up on the gates, gate posts and toll houses. He asks about Godshalk's final decision on parking at the entrances. He is not in favor of bare parking lots, and suggests that plantings go in between cars.

Description:Letter from Sterling Morton to Clarence E. Godshalk. Mr. Malloy assumed that Morton was interested in [a large donation for the hospital] when Morton commented that 'the sisters' run a good hospital and putting a hospital next to a major highway was a bad idea. The Board Committee on Education should meet Mr. Swink. He's glad the work on Lake Marmo is progressing, as well as the grass along the highway. He wants to bring the entrance to the Center back into the main stream of traffic. He asks for detailed drawings with very specific criteria. In addition to his own ideas, he wants to get input from Godshalk, Tony, Mrs. Z., and others.

Date: August 11 1960Creator: Godshalk, Clarence E.
Type: Document
Description:Letter from C. E. Godshalk to Sterling Morton talking about whether to hire Mr. Swink to take over for May Watts. While Mrs. Carton was not too enthusiastic about Swink, Watts thinks he is the best person to carry on her work. Godshalk doesn't believe that the change to the entrance to the parking lot should be made as walkers who use the parking lot should pay, too, as the lot requires maintenance as well as the roads. Tony has gone to Boston to the National Shade Tree Conference and the AABGA Convention. He sent Tony with 140 of Godshalk's slides of the Floriade and the botanical gardens of Europe. Godshalk has an idea for the front of the Arboretum Center, and he will have Tony prepare the map Morton suggested on his return. The rotunda terrace steps have been fixed, and work on Lake Marmo and the settling basin is progressing.

Type: Document
Description:Letter from Sterling Morton to Clarence E. Godshalk expressing that he is willing to employ Mr. Swink and that Mrs. Zurcher should also see him. He is glad that Tony has gone to National Shade Tree Conference. He notes about the parking lots that there is a problem with people parking in the "short term" parking place for the Arboretum Center and continuing on to the Arboretum. He also notes a public relations angle to parking lots: if charges made for cars only and pedestrians are free, this fee can be justified by the fact that patrolmen needed to control traffic and that cars cause wear and tear on roads. Such a plan could determine if later they might need to charge everyone. Sending letter to Ed Baker because there may be legal aspect concerning tax exemption; we need his advice before deciding about parking lot. He will have Ed call Godshalk about parking lot. He is glad to see work coming along well on Lake Marmo, that Godshalk has an idea for front of Arboretum Center, and that the rotunda terrace steps have been fixed.

Date: August 30 1960Creator: Godshalk, Clarence E.

Description:Letter from C. E. Godshalk to Sterling Morton updating him on the construction plan for the control houses and options for staffing them. He also shares his plan for repairing the Lake Marmo bridge. Mr. Swink has been hired and will work under the direction of May Watts. The plan is for him to take over her duties when she retires if everything works out. The work on Lake Marmo and the settling basin is almost complete. The Arboretum will get about $17,000.00 for the fill from Meadow Lake in addition to the beautiful lake. They are working to make their entrances beautiful. He responds to Morton's request about leveling the fountain.

Description:Letter from Sterling Morton to Clarence E. Godshalk. He sent approval of the gate house changes to Mr. Ward. Curbs with plantings are better than platforms. Posts should be 6 inch pipe, fitted with eyes for chain and filled with concrete. He cautions about trailer heaters with unsightly tanks. Electric heaters may be too costly. But proper ventilation would be required for LPG heaters, and conceal the tanks. He approves the change in location of the west gate house, which might be good if they start to charge for parking. Consider the same for the east gate house. He is pleased with the Meadow Lake dredging deal that Godshalk negotiated. He hopes the same for Lake Marmo, and that they both should not need cleaning for a long time. For the bridge he agrees to "put a new arch on either side, after cutting away all of the crumbling concrete." Also a new arch at the back of the old dam is a good idea. He suggests a new deck to tie it all together and he likes the look of a wooden railing to give a better view. He sees many changes to the map and roads in the past five years. He can't find the 'Bird Bath' on the map. He looks forward to meeting Mr. Swink, who has a big job to fill Mrs. Watts' shoes.

Description:Letter from C. E. Godshalk to Sterling Morton sharing information about ticketing systems for the new control houses. The price of the tickets needs to be set by Morton and the trustees. The Arboretum will staff the control houses with men from the Burns Agency. The stacks have been taken out in the stackroom at Thornhill and are being install above the laboratory at the Arboretum Center. The books are ready to go to Arbor Lodge and should be sent next week. The old hog house at South Farm is being torn down for additional nursery planting space. The work on converting the old cookhouse into four apartments is progressing well. The rest of the men are removing undesirable trees. He is still enthusiastic about the trucksters. Winter classes are going well, and the new colored map will be ready by spring. Mr. Swink, with a bird group, discovered a great horned owl using an abandoned hawk's nest at the Arboretum.

1961/06/22: C. E. Godshalk to Suzette Morton Zurcher (3.85881)
Date: June 22 1961Creator: Godshalk, Clarence E.
Type: Document
Description:Letter from C. E. Godshalk to Suzette Morton Zurcher stating he has nothing unusual to report. Godshalk received the Arthur Hoyt Scott Medal from Swarthmore College given to him in honor of his 40 years of work in developing The Morton Arboretum. They drove the Cadillac on their trip east, and they visited three arboretums: Morris Arboretum, Secrist Arboretum, and the Holden Arboretum. Mrs. Watts told Godshalk she wanted to give up all classes and charge of the Educational Program as she wasn't feeling up to the job. Floyd Swink is now in charge, and his new job has spurred him on to do even more. He will have four Channel 11 programs in September. Mrs. Watts would like to continue to work two days a week helping get class materials ready, working on a new general information book for the Arboretum and helping Godshalk can up some of her previous teaching programs on film. Traffic has slowed now that the bloom is over. Ed Baker is back, but has been so busy Godshalk hasn't had a chance to talk to him yet. He asks Zurcher to remember him to her mother and tell her how much he and Margaret are enjoying the car.

Date: September 24 1965Creator: Naser, Evelyn M.
Type: Document
Description:Letter from [Evelyn Naser] to Suzette Morton Zurcher saying she hopes Mrs. Zurcher is having a wonderful time on her trip and hopes the weather has been nice. At the Arboretum, it has been rainy. Tea room business is poor. Plans for the Fall Festival are going well, but other than counting the reservations for the dinner, they have no way of knowing how many people will attend. The Quarterly and the folders have not yet arrived. She and Tony examined a new water cooler, and they both liked it. The bulletin board project is at a halt until Mrs. Zurcher returns due to a disagreement between Arnie and Naser. Naser believes Mr. Kettleman will do a good job. Mrs. Watts has lined up everyone for the Prairie Path Day on October 23. Twenty-five people will lead walks on various parts of the path for people with different interests. Ray got back last night and is anxious to tell Zurcher about his trip. The health inspectors inspected the Tea Room and had nothing but good words for it. Alma Greene's husband had brain surgery yesterday. It went well, but he is in pain and most uncomfortable. The Jens Jensen exhibit had to be sent on, so Tony is going to Whitnall Park to check out a mushroom exhibit they would be willing to loan the Arboretum; Naser wants an exhibit hung during the Fall Festival in case there is inclement weather.
