This Dodecatheon media (shooting star, prairie shooting star, Eastern shooting star, prairie pointers, rooster heads, American cowslip, pride of Ohio) has white, dangling flowers. The five upward facing reflexed petals, yellow stamens, and style are fused at the base and converge into a downward facing point. The fused base has rings of white, yellow, and maroon. The basal leaves have smooth edges and are long and narrow with pointed tips.
