1956/01/25: Sterling Morton to Clarence E. Godshalk (3.104978)
Date: January 25 1956Creator: Morton, Sterling
Type: Document
Description:Letter from Sterling Morton to Clarence E. Godshalk. He's glad to hear of progress on buildings. He is sorry to hear of several deaths: Martin Carroll, Joe Burgee and John Holabird. He is aware of discussion about the new tollway. Being able to acquire several miles of right-of-way at once, should make the highway department be sensitive to positioning it favorably to Morton Arboretum. He has landscape sketches from Wagstaff to make the Lake Forest place nearly maintenance-free. In the plan could an Alpine currant hedge substitute for some of the yews? Parking spaces need to be longer and longer as the American cars are getting so much bigger. There were compliments about Godshalk's talk at the Shade Tree Conference.

Undated: Clarence E. Godshalk to Morton Arboretum Trustees (3.105014)
Creator: Godshalk, Clarence E.
Type: Document
Description:Undated letter from Clarence E. Godshalk to Morton Arboretum Trustees. In talking with Mrs. Watts and Mr. Gordon Scott about fees to charge for classes, they suggest a 10 cents per person charge for visitors. Small gate houses at the entrances could be set up and manned during open hours. He gives many benefits for the charge. They feel it's unfair to charge those serious visitors who want to attend classes, but not charge the recreational visitor. Certain donors and those who help report problems on trails could be given a button to permit free entry.

Date: May 18 1956Creator: Morton, Sterling
Type: Document
Description:Letter from Sterling Morton to C. E. Godshalk telling him he is sending him a large engraving of a dove tree that he received from the Arnold Arboretum after making a donation. He believes it is an example of wasted effort and money as well as poor public relations. The quality is not good, and it is too large. He believes most will be thrown out. He also notes that the acknowledgment has no signature or personal touch. Morton likes to think the Morton Arboretum is a more human and friendly place. Handwritten in pencil on letter: "Seen. thank you" with initials [G.S., possibly Gordon Scott?]
