Date: July 23 1943Creator: Godshalk, Clarence E.
Type: Document
Description:Letter from C. E. Godshalk to John T. Pirie stating he is unable to give Pirie much information about filberts based on his experience at the Arboretum. They have a number of varieties, but they don't produce much fruit. He suggests Pirie contact Hebden H. Corsan for further information. Castanea mollissima has had some fruit, but their stock has a tendency to grow in bush form. They don't have as much fruit as C. dentata, the native American sweet chestnut. These are subject to the blight. The Arboretum only has the common species of thornless honeylocust, so he doesn't know much about the varieties Calhoun and Millwood. He just tries to pick a well-shaped tree, vase-shaped with a full top. A local hog farmer has asked the Arboretum to save the seed pods from one honeylocust tree at the Arboretum, so he may have them analyzed to see if they could supplement corn in his hog rations. If so, he would plant them on all his fence rows. The Arboretum has agreed as long as he passes along the results. Godshalk will share the results with Pirie when he receives them.
