The stacks have been taken out in the stackroom at Thornhill and are being install above the laboratory at the Arboretum Center. The books are ready to go to Arbor Lodge and should be sent next week. The old hog house at South Farm is being torn down for additional nursery planting space. The work on converting the old cookhouse into four apartments is progressing well. The rest of the men are removing undesirable trees. He is still enthusiastic about the trucksters. Winter classes are going well, and the new colored map will be ready by spring. Mr. Swink, with a bird group, discovered a great horned owl using an abandoned hawk's nest at the Arboretum.

Description:Letter from C. E. Godshalk to Sterling Morton talking about whether to hire Mr. Swink to take over for May Watts. While Mrs. Carton was not too enthusiastic about Swink, Watts thinks he is the best person to carry on her work. Godshalk doesn't believe that the change to the entrance to the parking lot should be made as walkers who use the parking lot should pay, too, as the lot requires maintenance as well as the roads. Tony has gone to Boston to the National Shade Tree Conference and the AABGA Convention. He sent Tony with 140 of Godshalk's slides of the Floriade and the botanical gardens of Europe. Godshalk has an idea for the front of the Arboretum Center, and he will have Tony prepare the map Morton suggested on his return. The rotunda terrace steps have been fixed, and work on Lake Marmo and the settling basin is progressing.

Description:Letter from Anthony Tyznik to Sterling Morton sharing the results of the fountain tests and updating him on the progress on Route 53. The flower color is good and should draw a good crowd if the weather cooperates. They are having issues cleaning the lake; the soil is too wet. Planting is progressing around the Housing Project and the new lake. The Natural History Survey made some shock tests in Arbor Lake to study the progress of the small mouth bass with the results better than average. Godshalk wrote a letter relating some of his experiences aboard the ship and in the early part of his visit to Europe.

Description:Letter from C. E. Godshalk to Sterling Morton thanking Morton for his help in planning for his expense money for the upcoming trip. He was happy to hear that Morton transferred some securities to the Arboretum. Godshalk believes Morton's father would be happy with the progress at the Arboretum and that these last few years will go down in Arboretum history as outstanding ones. The Bird Construction Co. will soon be ready to start cleaning Lake Marmo. They took the temporary columns down today. He describes the progress on the new control house. He asked Tony to make some sketches for the area in front of the Arboretum Center. They are making the 3 foot square pebbled blocks for the terrace by the rotunda. They will plant trees from the street tree collection in the new parking area. Work on Route 53 will begin again tomorrow. He shares where Morton can send letters to him while Godshalk is in Europe, and he hopes Mrs. Morton is improving rapidly.

Tony named the new lake Meadow Lake, but this can be changed if necessary. Godshalk and Lowell will soon begin planning their upcoming trip to Europe. He shares his plan for the Amsterdam Horticultural Show exhibit. Retired AABGA member Carl Wedell will set up and look after the exhibit. Any monetary contribution Morton could give to the show would be helpful. He is glad to hear Mrs. Morton is much better.

Description:Letter from C. E. Godshalk to Sterling Morton stating Mr. Ward and Mr. Bartsch examined the terrace near the rotunda and the upper end of the hedge garden. Mr. Bartsch felt there should be a tower for a bird's-eye view of the Arboretum. Mrs. Watts feels that the present stack room size in the library is adequate. The two discussed plans for the library, then Godshalk discussed the plans with Ward and Bartsch. Mrs. Watts would like the little office which is in the upper northwest corner. While she is eligible for retirement, she would like to stay in active service for a while, then become naturalist emeritus at the Arboretum which Godshalk fully supports. Godshalk suggests that they get the ventilating system for the big lecture room fitted with a cooling system. He would also like to get the rooms in the basement connected to this ventilating system and their lighting system revamped, then classroom size would be adequate. Ward and Bartsch thought these items could be done. He updated Morton on the progress on the Route 53 project. The new lake is filling nicely. They have the best crew of workmen they have ever had; he expects to accomplish a great deal before fall. Godshalk will be on vacation for the last two weeks in July. Tony will be in charge while he is away.

Description:Letter from C. E. Godshalk to Sterling Morton clarifying that in the recent reports from Messers Keith and Longenecker that many of the ideas for the materials used in Arbordale were from Lowell's bulletins and plant material lectures rather than Lowell taking those ideas from Arbordale. Tony did a lot of the research and study on the plant groupings. Generally the reports made good points. Arboretum staff looked at the locusts in front of the Morton Salt Building; they will need to be cut back severely. They will also replace the Euonymus vegetus on the terrace at the same time.

Description:Letter from [Evelyn Naser] to Suzette Morton Zurcher saying she hopes Mrs. Zurcher is having a wonderful time on her trip and hopes the weather has been nice. At the Arboretum, it has been rainy. Tea room business is poor. Plans for the Fall Festival are going well, but other than counting the reservations for the dinner, they have no way of knowing how many people will attend. The Quarterly and the folders have not yet arrived. She and Tony examined a new water cooler, and they both liked it. The bulletin board project is at a halt until Mrs. Zurcher returns due to a disagreement between Arnie and Naser. Naser believes Mr. Kettleman will do a good job. Mrs. Watts has lined up everyone for the Prairie Path Day on October 23. Twenty-five people will lead walks on various parts of the path for people with different interests. Ray got back last night and is anxious to tell Zurcher about his trip. The health inspectors inspected the Tea Room and had nothing but good words for it. Alma Greene's husband had brain surgery yesterday. It went well, but he is in pain and most uncomfortable. The Jens Jensen exhibit had to be sent on, so Tony is going to Whitnall Park to check out a mushroom exhibit they would be willing to loan the Arboretum; Naser wants an exhibit hung during the Fall Festival in case there is inclement weather.

Description:Letter from C. E. Godshalk to Sterling Morton stating how much he, Mrs. Godshalk, and Arboretum staff are enjoying his reports. Due to the rain, they are having trouble keeping up with the outside work. However, it looks like most of the sod will be saved. He updates him on the progress of the new building. Mr. Hubbard said the plans for the South Farm remodeling are almost ready for bids, and the data for the architecture competition for the new housing project is ready for printing. The Supreme Court has cleared everything for the new toll road; Godshalk has collected numerous pictures of the heavy traffic due to the Arboretum. Mr. Hattis, who is working on the new water system, has requested a complete topographic map. Tony Tyznik completed the project. The Arboretum had a great many visitors this spring. Heman Howard, Assistant Horticulturist of the Arnold Arboretum, was much impressed during his visit. The purchase of the Jones property is almost completed. Mr. Wallack is trying to sell his 2.05 acres in the middle of the Arboretum. Godshalk believes he will have a difficult time due to the high asking price and the questionable right of way.

Description:Letter from C. E. Godshalk to Sterling Morton. Godshalk, Ed Baker, Mr. and Mrs. Zurcher, and Mr. Ward met to go over the building plans. He summarizes the results of the discussion about the housing project for staff. He shares their proposed plan for the Arboretum to update the border of the Arboretum and for the Arboretum to cease farming, renting out any remaining farm land. White, their present farm foreman, would like to rent the land while remaining an employee of the Arboretum, with time off to plant and harvest. Extending the Arboretum boundaries will save on taxes. Godshalk plans to tear down the farm buildings. Tony (Tyznik) and Godshalk will have a plan drawn up by the Trustees meeting showing the recommended new boundaries of the Arboretum. He will do his best to get something lined up for the purchase of the Yackley, Herboth, McMahon, and Jones lands. Cases of Dutch elm disease have been reported in Aurora and Highland Park. He has arranged for Dr. Tehon or one of his men to speak at two meetings for professionals in the Chicago area about how to recognize Dutch elm disease and oak wilt and prevent their spread. They will demonstrate how to treat the trees. The Arboretum will also have exhibits showing how to recognize symptoms of these diseases and will give out sheets on control measures for visitors.

Description:Letter from C. E. Godshalk to Sterling Morton saying he will take a look at the James King Home for men, then write to Mr. McClave. Due to the mild weather they have been getting, they may be able to do some planting in sod areas. Tyznik, Crowley and Godshalk have started a research project at the old Duel Farm to show people how they can handle woodland properties—keeping one naturalistic, the other one semi-natural. He describes the land around his vacation home in Wisconsin. He looks forward to getting away from people for a while and relax there. He believes Morton covered the subject very well for the proposed booklet. Mrs. Cudahy and the Simonds children believe that the general plan of the Arboretum was worked out by Mr. Simonds. However, Godshalk says not much of the present Arboretum layout is related to Simonds’ original plan. He is enclosing a plan with the things Simonds planned marked in red. Godshalk recalls the spring of 1922 when Simonds shipped 138, 000 plants to the Arboretum without a single planting plan to work with. Simonds plans were for a beautiful park, not an Arboretum. Teuscher, Kammerer and Godshalk all had more to do with the present day Arboretum layout than did Simonds. Godshalk has kept an accurate diary of the Arboretum’s development. Simonds was ultimately fired by Joy Morton.

Description:Letter from C. E. Godshalk to Sterling Morton apologizing for the delay in answering his letter. He was getting Mr. Tyznik started and preparing for the board meeting. He is happy that Mrs. Zurcher and Dan Peterkin going to be vice-chairmen. Mrs. Zurcher suggested that the Arboretum have a Christmas party for employees, paid for by the Chairman’s fund. It was a huge success and staff members and their wives asked Godshalk to thank Morton and the rest of the trustees for the party. She also suggested the Arboretum have a party for the trustees and the employees to become better acquainted. She would like to create a more comprehensive information bulletin. Mr. King was out, and they talked over Arboretum activities and the steer feeding program; trustees are taking a more active role than in the past. He will speak to Mrs. Watts and Mr. Kammerer to see if they can offer suggestions on how Mr. Hamill as a trustee could contribute to the Arboretum. He then talked about several types of equipment. He has Mr. Tyznik working on a plan for the area south of the Administration Building. They are making a very detailed outline of all the phases of the research program.
