The site of the Springhill Prairie lies adjacent to land once leased to the University of Illinois at Chicago to use as a research plot for its Drug and Horticultural Experimental Station. Since 2010, the Springhill Prairie site was included as part of the East Prairie Complex and was referred to as the UIC remnant prairie. In the fall of 2020, the UIC remnant prairie was designated a separate worksite and renamed the Springhill Prairie.
