Description:Black and white photograph of a residential street lined with American elms prior to destruction by Dutch elm disease. This image was used in an article for The Morton Arboretum Quarterly, volume 29, number 4 (December 1993), titled "Developing Better Elms: The Plant-resistance Component of Integrated Pest Management." The caption for the image reads:
Before the late 1950s, the streets of many American cities, like the one shown here, were lined with American elms. The beautiful cathedral-like avenues were devastated by Dutch elm disease.
1957/01/07: Sterling Morton to Clarence E. Godshalk (3.105008)
Date: January 7 1957Creator: Morton, Sterling
Type: Document
Description:Letter from Sterling Morton to Clarence E. Godshalk. He is pleased to hear that the Christmas Party was such a success. He can bring his travel slides to the summer picnic instead. Suzette mentioned the wonderful talk that Arnold gave. Morton appreciated the work ethic of the men Godshalk brought to help at his house [Lake Forest]. He inserts that if the President gets his troop authorizations we are sure to have a war, and other political comments. He is pleased that the tree planting at the house is moving along well, and "this will be a way to show people how to screen off noise and motion." Godshalk can get the key to the gate from the Zurchers, next door. Mr. Ryerson spoke of the wonderful work Mrs. Watts did on Channel 11. He doesn't want her to get too involved for fear she will not keep up with her Morton Arboretum duties. He's sure the person who would watch Mrs. Watts on TV is looking for information and not entertainment. He comments that he no longer feels like doing the brick-laying, plumbing, etc, but is content to do some occasional pruning.

He wants to make sure she keeps her focus on the Arboretum. It's raining in California, and he had to clear some septic lines. He has a man who will look after his plantings when he leaves.

Description:Letter from Sterling Morton to Clarence E. Godshalk. Mrs. Morton will be giving a talk on the Arboretum to the Santa Barbara Garden Club. He requests a large variety of 35 mm slides, showing Thornhill and other buildings, in all seasons, the hedge garden, a map of the grounds, and some forestry plots. He will return the slides afterward. He suggests wording for the slides "A great outdoor museum" "Founded in 1922" "by Joy Morton". He has used Title-Craft in Chicago for word slides in the past, but he thinks that Godshalk has equipment and expertise to create these slides for the presentation instead.

Description:Letter from Sterling Morton to C. E. Godshalk telling him it is fine for Godshalk to open letters addressed to Morton sent to the Arboretum. If any of them requires a decision, he would like Godshalk to include his opinion along with the correspondence. He describes his drive through the desert on his way to Los Angeles; he experienced snow in the desert during the trip, and he hated Las Vegas. He has looked over Godshalk's letters to Mr. Larson, and he is happy Godshalk has his letter on record if reporters should come after him again. He thanks Godshalk for the information about the planting at Morton's house; Mrs. Zurcher tells him that everything is going well. He shall have a chance to see how things are established before he goes abroad.

Description:Letter from Sterling Morton to C. E. Godshalk sharing his opinions on possible charges for admission/classes at the Arboretum. His first reaction to charging an admission fee is unfavorable although he realizes that Godshalk is having policing troubles, and the fee might help pay for the policing. If they do charge an admission fee, he believes it is better to wait until the Arboretum has a single entrance. Mr. Baker will have to explore the legality of the charge and its possible affect on their tax-exempt status. If there is a charge, there should also be free days. He thinks that the charge for the education program is too high. He believes there should be a charge for each busload of people if the people get off the bus to listen to the lecturer. He doesn't believe they should charge for the Cub Scout leaders training course. He believes class tickets should be printed like coupons, payment made at purchase, be nontransferable, and refunds should be 50% of the amount unused. The class should be at least self-sustaining. He also gives his ideas about people attending just one class of a series and guests.

Description:Letter from Sterling Morton to C.E. Godshalk stating he hopes Godshalk's expectations with respect to the gravel and fill sale will work out, giving the Arboretum a lake and some extra funds for road improvements at the Arboretum. If the construction workers do not put up a fence, Morton expects Godshalk will need to keep a man working in the area to keep the heavy machinery off Arboretum property. He is happy to hear Godshalk is in the house moving business and that all the plants have been moved to Lake Forest. Morton wonders about Godshalk's remark about many entrances after the clover-leaf is put in; Morton had the impression that the housing area would be fenced off from the rest of the Arboretum. They should give careful thought before adopting an admission plan. He is not a fan of an admission fee, but believes people should be charged for classes. The list of slides looks interesting. He likes the seasonal arrangement. Morton will add some autumn photos of his own. The Contraflex is a nice machine, especially for close-ups.

Description:Letter from Sterling Morton to C. E. Godshalk saying the slides are excellent. He feels the person who took the photo of the large plaque did a superb job, and it should be the opening slide for all lectures. He has never liked the medallion, and he would like to have the slide replaced with one made from the Schneider etching. He is transcribing Mrs. Morton's talk. He would like to give up the idea of a admission charge for a year or so until they get the general plan of traffic settled. He would like to charge for classes which are for individual benefit, but not those that are of a general educational or civic value.

Description:Letter from Sterling Morton to C. E. Godshalk with questions for Godshalk for Mrs. Morton's upcoming garden club talk. He would like further information about juneberry. What is the size of the Arboretum? He would like 25 of the folders that are handed out at the Administration Building sent to them. What is the official title of the organization that sponsors Channel 11? He would like a slide of the Rustic Building if Godshalk has one that does it justice. He also asks for other pictures of the hedge collection; he doesn't like the ones already sent. Her lecture is April 1, so Godshalk should have the slides back soon after that. He would like Godshalk to let him know if he needs any of the slides back sooner.

He has projected the slides they are thinking of offering for sale several times; he will pick the five or ten he likes best and loan Godshalk some of his. He wants to put the folders on every second or third chair for Mrs. Morton's garden club lecture. Since the Zurchers have moved, they feel at loose ends; perhaps they will buy a place in the city, too. He like the idea of putting the Arboretum on film. He goes into detail about his opinion on the charges for classes and tours. He asks for botanical and common names of plants not usually used for hedges that would work as hedges.

Description:Letter from Sterling Morton to Clarence E. Godshalk, delighted to hear of the progress at Morton Arboretum this summer. He mentioned that, unlike Godshalk who was pleased to see deer up north, in California deer are a pest, eating well watered garden plants. He likes the new contaflex and is considering buying one duty free in Shannon, Ireland. He suggests that Godshalk would enjoy seeing some of the gardens in Europe. He likes the relationship that Godshalk has established with the highway department. Exchanging large tree removal for permitting crushing and washing equipment seems a good deal. He's sorry to hear that the large elm near Lake Marmo seems to be diseased. He is willing to authorize the purchase of a more powerful sprayer if that would help. He suggests that Godshalk talk with the "salt treatment expert in the Chicago office" when he's ready to begin road building. "It has been found that salt added to the foundation of black top roads has a very good effect." The same with gravel roads. He is uncertain where the "new river bridge" might be, but he sees it as a good location to haul trees for the border of the road. That will help compact the gravel before eventually adding the black top. He laments news of Dutch elm disease in Hinsdale and Lake Forest.
