1945/01/16: C. E. Godshalk to Joseph Cudahy and Jean Morton Cudahy (3.99612)
Date: January 16 1945Creator: Godshalk, Clarence E.
Type: Document
Description:Letter from C. E. Godshalk to Joseph Cudahy and Jean Morton Cudahy detailing his thoughts on future plans for the Arboretum. He gives a detailed plan on how to handle the traffic on busy Sundays in May and October and for possible future flower shows. He discusses an Arboretum tea room and picnic areas. He talks about building buildings for a nature school covering nature study and horticulture which could also cover agricultural topics in the off season. He suggests tearing down the Home Farm buildings and building one building for tool storage. 4-H shows could also be held at this site. He would like to create demonstration educational exhibits of small country home sites, perhaps funded by Sterling Morton in memory of his father. He suggests building farm buildings on Warrenville Road to demonstrate the running of a modern large farm. Finally, he suggests building an air strip and tearing down and building additional housing. He asks for their comments on his ideas.

Description:Letter from C. E. Godshalk to Joseph and Jean Morton Cudahy saying he has been doing the bookkeeping, with Miss Rasch doing any typing involved. He is happy he learned the new bookkeeping system before he passes it over to anyone else. He is hesitant to let Jones do the bookkeeping in addition to his janitorial duties because Jones is slow, can't type, and there are many interruptions during the day which would cause people to have to look for Jones. He proposes Miss Rasch handle the bookkeeping, turning over her work on the bulletin subscriptions to Mrs. Jones. If Jones has extra time, Godshalk suggests he work on labels or in the herbarium, work he could do as time permits. He also updates them on Mrs. Jones health issues.

1945/01/23: Joseph Cudahy to C. E Godshalk (3.99610)
Date: January 23 1945Creator: Cudahy, Joseph M.
Type: Document
Description:Letter from Joseph Cudahy to C. E. Godshalk saying that the road, bridge, and traffic situation will have to await the Cudahy's return. They are thinking of hiring a traffic expert at that time. The Arboretum's budget is double what it was ten years ago, and serious consideration must be given to future expenditures. There will be no tea room or provision for feeding people on the Arboretum's grounds. If Mrs. Brossman wishes to establish a restaurant, it must not be on Arboretum property, and the Arboretum will not help fund or encourage this enterprise. They do not propose to erect any buildings to provide for a nature school. No commitment has been made regarding future Flower Shows on Thornhill grounds. The one they did host caused a great deal of work for Arboretum employees and was not as financially successful as the Illinois Garden Club expected. There is no reason for the Arboretum to get into animal husbandry or 4H. They acquired the farm lands to protect the privacy of the Arboretum. He would like the Arboretum to dispose of the pure bred hogs. Farming should be kept to growing crops, perhaps later on feeding the crops to steers. The only housing they are interested in building is houses for employees located in strategic locations in the Arboretum to help protect it. They would only approve farm buildings on Warrenville Road when it is absolutely necessary to protect Arboretum equipment. The landing field for airplanes is out of the question. They are interested in Godshalk's ideas on future development, but suggest they be confined to trees and woody plants and to scientific work with them. The Cudahys are disappointed that Godshalk feels Jones cannot handle the bookkeeping. If Jones does the label work and Miss Rasch and Mrs. Jones divide the bookkeeping, there will not be any increase in pay. They are sorry to learn Mrs. Jones has been ill and wonder whether she will be able to satisfactorily continue with her work in the future.

1945/01/25: Joseph Cudahy to Sterling Morton (3.99609)
Date: January 25 1945Creator: Cudahy, Joseph M.
Type: Document
Description:Letter from Joseph Cudahy to Sterling Morton enclosing some letters written between Clarence Godshalk and Joseph and Jean Morton Cudahy. Cudahy and Jean Morton Cudahy were disappointed with Godshalk's suggestions feeling they were leading to a county fair program. He is concerned about Godshalk's enthusiasm about farming, particularly the shows and sales. He tried to impress upon Godshalk that the scientific features of the Arboretum come first and that he is not doing enough thinking along those lines. He feels he didn't make much of an impression. Things are fine with the Cudahys. They were at a dinner with a number of Washington people when Wallace's appointment was announced. There was a general determination to block the appointment. If that was not possible, it was suggested that the loaning powers be taken away from the Department of Commerce. After Morton has read through the correspondence, Cudahy asks him to give them his impressions on the Godshalk matter. Handwritten on the bottom of the letter, "Clarence was out of order in suggesting ways & means for you to dispose of your money."

Description:Letter from C. E. Godshalk to Joseph and Jean Morton Cudahy stating he would try Jones as bookkeeper. They had agreed he be paid an extra $25 per month for the bookkeeping. Most of the bookkeeping typing will be eliminated when they dispose of the pure bred business. Perhaps Miss Rasch can handle the petty cash to cut down on the interruptions during the day. Mrs. Jones, while improving, is still confined at home, but is doing the urgent typing for Mrs. Watts.

Description:Letter from C. E. Godshalk to Joseph and Jean Morton Cudahy saying their letter was clear about their feelings about future development at the Arboretum. He hopes they believe he doesn't have the impression that the Arboretum has unlimited funds and his job is to spend them, as he has been consistently under budget. He wrote his letter for three reasons: He had the impression a set of nature school buildings would be built after the war; Mrs. Dynes told him there would be no more flower shows at the pier, and from questions she asked, he presumed she had assurance that the show would be moved to the Arboretum; At the trustees meeting, it was proposed that Mr. Holabird head a committee to formulate a building plan, including employee housing. For these reasons, Godshalk had the impression many changes were coming to the Arboretum, and they would welcome his thoughts on them. Since this is not the case, he will not bother them again with such matters. He asks for clarification from them on what they want done about the hog business.

Description:Letter from Joseph Cudahy to Sterling Morton saying he believes Clarence (Godshalk) took silence for consent on several subjects discussed by him and Mrs. Watts in Jean's presence. Everything is clearly understood now. He says the Ward case has been popularly resolved in Florida and asks how it has been received in Santa Barbara. He has declined an offer from Marshfield Steel & Co. to purchase stock owned by Jean and the Arboretum.

Description:Letter from Sterling Morton to Joseph M. Cudahy. He is relieved that Clarence E. Godshalk did not get upset by Cudahy's letter. Morton likes Godshalk's idea of a small subsistence farm project. He feel his father would have approved, but he wants more time to think about it.

1945/02/16: Sterling Morton to Joseph Cudahy (3.99604)
Date: February 16 1945Creator: Morton, Sterling
Type: Document
Description:Letter from Sterling Morton to Joseph Cudahy in response to ideas put forth by Clarence E. Godshalk. He is not in favor of having livestock on site. He feels a tea shop would be a nuisance, but necessary. He thinks the Arboretum doesn't need to have flower shows to attract visitors. He would like to get Holabird to plan housing for employees on the grounds. His father liked Henry Ford's ideas for employee farmsteads. Sterling Morton shares his own idea in great detail for scientific research work in trees with a research staff and facilities, much as Arnold Arboretum does in a different climate and soil. He thinks that Godshalk has solved traffic issues, although he's sorry that his father didn't require the state to put in an underpass at the hard road. He and Wirt showed Clements and Hardy around the Arboretum.
