Description:Letter from Sterling Morton to Clarence E. Godshalk. He requests some ideas for other uses of the former library in the Thornhill Building, rather than the "somewhat funereal, museum-like aspect of it and put it to active use." Mrs. Zurcher will join in the discussion. "The addition to the Redwood Building is most suitable." Morton Salt Company vacation policy is two weeks after 1 year, and 3 weeks after 15 years. You can adopt this policy, or even 3 weeks after 12 years.

1953/09/16: Sterling Morton to The Trustees of the Morton Arboretum (3.101894)
Date: December 14 1954Creator: Morton, Sterling
Type: Document
Description:Letter from Sterling Morton to the Trustees of the Morton Arboretum.
The architectural firm of Holabird & Root & Burgee are working on an addition to the Administration Building, to include laboratories, offices, and an adjoining propagating greenhouse. He feels this would be a suitable memorial to our late Chairman. Feeling that the active members of the Board of Trustees should in addition to their general duties, have special interest in particular phases of the work I am appointing committees as follows: Finances and Investments: Mr. King and Mr. Zurcher - Grounds, Roads, Plantings. etc. : Mr. Peterkin and Mr. Zurcher - Building and House Committee: Mrs. Zurcher and Mr. Baker. The duties of the first two committees are, of course, obvious. The third committee will have general supervision of the furnishings, decoration, etc. of the Administration and Thornhill Buildings. In addition, it will from time to time inspect all other buildings of the Arboretum, make recommendations on their usefulness. maintenance, repairs, etc. It will also be its province to recommend new structures, if needed, and to consult on the design thereof.
He welcomes recommendations of a suitable person to fill the vacancy of Chairman, and he spells out the qualifications to include residence in the Chicago area and interest in the basic objectives of the Arboretum.

Date: November 16 1953Creator: Morton, Sterling
Type: Document
Description:Letter from Sterling Morton to Clarence E. Godshalk, dictated on 3 different dates. He would like additional copies of the report to give to Mr. Hamill and Wirt. He feels the Holabird & Root plan for the gallery has too much glass and would be hard to heat. He will talk with Mrs. Zurcher about other ideas. He would like the Trustees to get more involved to lighten the load on himself and Godshalk. He remarks that he and Wirt are the only two left from the beginning of the Arboretum, and Wirt is inactive. He is looking for recommendations for a new Board Member. On 12/08/1953, he discusses in great detail a Skilsaw chainsaw as well as a pneumatic tree trimmer.

Description:Letter from Sterling Morton to Clarence E. Godshalk. The Board of Trustees decided to make Mrs. Zurcher a joint Vice President along with Mr. Peterkin. Because of Sterling Morton's long absences, it would be good to have both available. He is pleased that she is showing increasing interest in the Arboretum. She is as efficient and resourceful as her late aunt [Jean Morton Cudahy]. She was a favorite of her grandfather [Joy Morton]. Because of Mr. Hamill's move to Asheville, he is willing to resign from the Board. There is already a vacancy on the Board, so Morton is asking what other tasks could be assigned to Hamill, perhaps researching and reporting on Biltmore Forest.

Description:Letter from Sterling Morton to Clarence E. Godshalk. Mrs. Zurcher told him of the party. He hopes there will be future parties where the Trustees get to know the staff. The organization needs to look to younger people, as he is beginning to feel his years. He details his needs for delivery of a Winpower generator in California. He is glad to see that Tyzink is work well. He is "enormously interested in the maintenance research program." He wants a copy of the outline, and he might have some suggestions to add. In new construction, changing grade around trees can be a serious problem, as happened in Lake Forest. It hardly seems like Christmas with the sun and flowers. Happy New Year.

Description:Letter from Sterling Morton to Clarence E. Godshalk. He would like copies of past articles so that there is no repetition. [For Mrs. Morton's article for the local Garden Club], telling about projected new work would not repeat past ideas. He discusses the differences in equipment: Skilsaw, Porter-Cable cutter or Schiller-Pfeiffer Little Wonder Clippers for trimming hedges. Thanks for the pines for his Lake Forest place. If Mrs. Zurcher wants some too, he will take care of the bill. Morton is glad that Godshalk likes the binoculars.

Type: Document
Description:Letter from Sterling Morton to Clarence E. Godshalk. He was relieved by Godshalk's clarification of the Research Projects. It seems a well thought out plan. He offers suggestions on road construction data to be kept. Miss George sent you draft copies of the articles he is writing for Mrs. Zurcher's proposed book, and requests any comments. He agrees that keeping the Field Day Tests for Small Equipment should be kept small for the Chicago area only. He suggests $25 for Godshalk to pay for the old water heater, truck chassis and Heatolator for Godshalk's cabin in Wisconsin. For the 1929 Ford, Morton suggests that it might have more future utility than the $10 from selling it for scrap. He thanks him for installing the pines in Lake Forest and paying Arboretum men instead of the expense of professional tree men. In the spring add as many more pines as necessary, including at Mrs. Zurcher's property. He is pleased that the classes are doing so well. He suggests exploring a schedule and staff compensation to add more classes than one night. He and Mrs. Morton went to Palm Springs to "bake out our virus infection," but they felt worse. So they cancelled the first part of their trip around the world until they are well.
The cover note from Miss George to Godshalk indicates that the articles Morton wants Godshalk to review are attached.

Now that the Lacey and Johnson lands are clear Godshalk can begin to work on them. "It will be interesting to see what comes back in the way of underbrush in the Johnson woods which have been so heavily pastured for so many years." The fall classes look very interesting. Mrs. Watts is 'most ingenious.' Please keep on Mrs. Zurcher and Mr. Baker on the building program. He compares flights on several airplanes.

He received the preliminary drawings covering the new bronze memorial panel for the lobby of the Administration Building, new marble memorial panel for the Thornhill House entrance lobby, drawings of new metal frames for doors and windows on the south wall of the main room of Thornhill House, and also suggested reroofing on the porch of the Godshalk residence. He thinks double pane windows at Thornhill should reduce the cost of heating. He offers suggestion for changes for the doors and transoms. The plastic roof on the porch at Godshalk residence will let in more light than canvas would. Copies sent to Godshalk and Mrs. Zurcher. Description:Letter from Sterling Morton to Clarence E. Godshalk. His recent medical tests confirm that he is in good health. He received the revised plan from Holabird & Root for the laboratories, etc, leaving the artistic end to Mrs. Zurcher. The butternut panel will look better than the bronze one. He is pleased that the Building Commission has dropped the idea of pre-fab houses, instead going for a solid masonry build, which will reduce future maintenance. He used Chlordane to keep frogs away from the residence. He's looking for suggestions to keep down the crabgrass in California. He's pleased with the progress on fencing. He comments on the possible use of salt on plants to treat diseases, but waits for Dr. Tehon's results. He urges Godshalk to attend conferences and meetings himself, to keep up with arboreta trends. He approves of changing off the new roof at Godshalk's house to the Chairman's Fund. He offers political comments on China, US and France.

Description:A digital recording of an oral history interview with Rita Hassert, library collections manager of the Sterling Morton Library. This interview was conducted by Kristin Arnold and took place on August 10, 2022 in the conference room of the library at The Morton Arboretum. This is the second of two interviews.
The interview focuses on Hassert's observations of how the Sterling Morton Library has developed during her employment at The Morton Arboretum, which began in 1986. Topics include changes to the library's physical space, such as the construction of the Special Collections addition and the library's collections. Hassert also discusses library exhibits and events, like the Leafing Through The Pages book discussion group as well as major projects such as the retrospective cataloging project and the launch of ACORN (Arboretum COllections and Resources Nexus).

Description:Letter from Sterling Morton to C. E. Godshalk saying Ed is working on getting some things straightened out at the Arboretum. Morton is happy they are taking out the steps in the lecture room and sloping the entire floor which will give better visibility. He suggests that a platform be put behind the information desk, so the employee may be seated while interacting with the public, but be at their level while they are standing. He hopes it will be possible to go ahead and obtain bids for the project in March. He wants to give careful study to Godshalk's plan for the entrances. He says it is nice that Godshalk is so confident the Arboretum can secure the Jones land. The Shade Tree Conference is in September, and they would be happy for Godshalk to stay with them if he attends, but would understand if he would rather stay at the headquarters. He congratulates Godshalk on the liquidation of the farm. The toll road situation seems somewhat fluid, but Morton is happy there will be 618 feet from Warrenville Road for the south boundary of the toll road.

Description:Letter from Sterling Morton to C. E. Godshalk returning the memos from the Salt Producers Association and Mr. Larson. He trusts that the salt treatment will save many elms, and it will increase the use of salt. They should encourage Mr. Larson in his experiments, but the Arboretum staff shouldn't put much time and effort into it. Morton has been laid up during the major part of his trip to Chicago, so he probably won't be able to make it out to the Arboretum. However, Ed Baker and the Zurchers have given him a general idea of what is going on. While laid up, he went over the final plans from Holabird & Root. He thinks that the Building Committee has done an excellent job straightening out the details. He thinks that the road and housing projects are under good control. The tollway location is still indefinite. He is glad Godshalk has completely recovered from his illness.

He is sending Tikalsky's proposal, along with a copy of this letter, to Mrs. Zurcher who will distribute them to the other trustees. Morton's reaction is unfavorable since the Arboretum was created for woody plants, and peonies are perennials which seem out of line with the Arboretum's purpose. The trustees need to decide whether or not they want to get into perennial gardens as well as woody plants.

He put together a program of 180 slides from his around the world trip. He can pare it down for a 45 minute presentation at Morton Arboretum, to include slides of botanical interest. He is interested in the 16 mm films which were taken on a cruise ship. His previous projector was stolen from Mrs. Zurcher's car in Grant Park. He has upgraded his slide projector to 500 watts for a brighter picture. He upgraded his Gravely tractor over the one he sent to the Arboretum. He likes the roller, which is a huge improvement over the cement roller that took two men to pull. Did you get the reel mower and the governor? He will present them with a roller, if useful. Description:Letter from Sterling Morton to Clarence E. Godshalk. He is summarizing his decisions concerning "my place" [Lake Forest]. With C. D. Wagstaff senior largely retiring, Morton doesn't have much confidence in Wagstaff junior to do much more than planting. Working with the architect, Ralph Milman, they agree on a wall around the motor court. Morton likes the idea of a large evergreen wall to provide a year-round screen, with flowering shrubs and trees in front. He continues with very precise detail about specific trees to be moved or planted and exactly in which location. He describes the precise plan worked out with the man who will grade the property. Excess topsoil will be put in the depression where the old house was. He would like some hemlocks to be planted between his property and "Suzie's". Also he would like Godshalk to order 3 or 4 wintercreeper to soften the corners of the house, even though they will be painting it. "You are authorized to have the local landscape or nursery people do any or all of the work." He thanks Godshalk for helping with his goal of having a small place with low maintenance. He still has not yet received a bill from the Arboretum for previous work done.

Description:Letter from Sterling Morton to Clarence E. Godshalk. Mrs. Zurcher, Mr. Fisher and Morton selected 7 houses to build, plus a few extras. Building is slow now, and perhaps they can get "some efficient operator" to build them to provide much needed facilities for staff. He asked Fisher about the Jaffrey house, with the idea that the second floor be removed to make it a "large commodious single family house in a commanding position in the operating center of the Arboretum." If the highway cloverleaf requires the removal of the two south houses, there will be a greater need for another house in this location. Mr. Fisher has heard that the highway department will pay up to $1/per yard for "good accessible fill". This might help pay for the underpass. He is pleased to get back to a house [Santa Barbara] where everything is in working order. Lake Forest has problems. He won't bother Godshalk with plantings for Lake Forest, but would like some of the crabapples, yews and thorns for someone else to oversee.

Description:Letter from Sterling Morton to Clarence E. Godshalk. He is sorry that Godshalk has been held up by a strike. He hopes the fire door between the old and new buildings will be installed for the dedication. The lobby, general office, curved hall and lecture room are important to be finished for viewers. He is sorry for the overhead door trouble at South Farm. He had to install a motor and remote control for Mrs. Morton to open their door at Lake Forest, but that shouldn't be needed at South Farm. What should be done with the Jaffray house? He likes the idea of having independent contractors [Price] do the tree trimming as opposed to the full wages of an employee [Sharpless]. Ask the Salt Company to donate an addressograph machine that they no longer are using rather than buy one for the Arboretum. He is surprised that the Dutch elm disease has taken hold in the Arboretum, but is assured that Godshalk will identify, remove and burn them as quick as possible. He questions how the beetles can travel so far so fast. Mrs. Zurcher is working on plans for the September 27 dedication. He is pleased that she is getting so energetically involved. He hopes that Morton family member stay involved for years to come.

Description:Letter from Sterling Morton to Clarence E. Godshalk. He is pleased to hear of the progress on the new building. If a few items are left unfinished before the meeting, that will help people see the progress that has been made. Victor Zurcher was impressed with the efficiency of the new work center at South Farm. He is pleased that Godshalk will be able to cover the work on the trees at $10 per tree in the regular budget. He hopes the new climber will be a positive addition. Test holes where he would like to build another lake show the soil is just what the highway department will want for fill. Godshalk should work with Zurcher and Ed Baker to get a good price for it. He would not be upset if the lake only fills to the level of the river, but doesn't want to see any of the dirty river water enter the new lake. He details other measures connected to the new lake, including putting in a new dam. Because of the dire need for a solution to Dutch elm disease, he is willing to try any effort. Mrs. Zurcher reports Dutch elm disease on a tree on the Lake Forest property. Morton recommends that it be tested, as it might be drooping because of the 17 year cicadas. He will condense his speech to 10 minutes for the meeting so that guest will be able to give full attention to the main speaker. Help from Argonne Laboratories to trace the circulation within trees with radioactive materials would give insight in the Dutch elm problem.

Description:Letter from Sterling Morton to C. E. Godshalk sharing his opinions on possible charges for admission/classes at the Arboretum. His first reaction to charging an admission fee is unfavorable although he realizes that Godshalk is having policing troubles, and the fee might help pay for the policing. If they do charge an admission fee, he believes it is better to wait until the Arboretum has a single entrance. Mr. Baker will have to explore the legality of the charge and its possible affect on their tax-exempt status. If there is a charge, there should also be free days. He thinks that the charge for the education program is too high. He believes there should be a charge for each busload of people if the people get off the bus to listen to the lecturer. He doesn't believe they should charge for the Cub Scout leaders training course. He believes class tickets should be printed like coupons, payment made at purchase, be nontransferable, and refunds should be 50% of the amount unused. The class should be at least self-sustaining. He also gives his ideas about people attending just one class of a series and guests.
